Philomusica was formed in autumn 1966, consisting originally of a Soloists’ Consort of 16 voices and about 24 chorus members. Its first concert was given in February the following year. The main driving force behind Philomusica in the early years was James Walkley, who was for many years a professional singer and for a time a lay clerk at Gloucester Cathedral. He also founded the Cheltenham Bach Choir in 1946. In 1988 he was awarded the MBE for his services to music.
In the early years Philomusica had several conductors; this was essential because the choir thought nothing of giving up to 30 concerts a year! However, one man, James Cowley, was the backbone of Philomusica’s conducting staff and over time he became the principal conductor. Jim was especially noted for his devotion to the music of Bach and that of English composers, especially Elgar. As well as his work with Philomusica Jim Cowley served as Director of Music at Tetbury Parish Church, holding that post for a few weeks short of thirty years until his untimely death in December 1998.
An early landmark for Philomusica was the invitation to take part in the 1972 celebrations in Down Ampney to mark the centenary of the birth in that Gloucestershire village of the composer, Ralph Vaughan Williams. This invitation recognised the reputation the choir had already acquired for singing music by English composers and as a result of that invitation more works by Vaughan Williams, such as Dona Nobis Pacem and Toward the Unknown Region, entered our repertoire.
English music has always been at the heart of the choir’s repertoire, especially the music of Sir Edward Elgar. In 1978 Philomusica mounted an ambitious and highly successful two-week festival of Elgar’s music in Tewkesbury. As the centrepiece of the festival Elgar’s two substantial oratorios, The Apostles and The Kingdom were performed in Tewkesbury Abbey. These performances took place on the same day, as Elgar had always hoped; this was the first time that this had been accomplished and attracted Elgar enthusiasts from around the world to the festival. Several more Elgar festivals took place in subsequent years in Hereford, Gloucester and Worcester, further enhancing Philomusica’s reputation in the music of Elgar.
Highlights of the Society’s history have included performances on two occasions attended by members of the Royal Family; one by the Prince and Princess of Wales and one by Princess Michael of Kent. The choir has also made several highly successful overseas concert tours. In 1990 we visited Holland to take part in a Mozart Festival and in 1996 we visited Metz in Northern France where we joined with a local choir to perform two concerts, including one in Metz Cathedral, and gave a concert on our own in the town’s premier concert hall, L’Arsenal. Two years later we were delighted to host a reciprocal visit by our French colleagues and together we gave performances of the great Te Deum by Berlioz in Pershore Abbey and Gloucester Cathedral, conducted by Jim Cowley. Sadly, those were the last major concerts that he conducted before his death in December 1998.
In autumn 2000 Philomusica marked the Millennium by visiting New England where we performed both in Gloucester and Worcester, Massachusetts. The Millennium celebrations continued on our return from the USA; a few weeks later, in Cheltenham Town Hall, we gave the first performance of The Crown of Life, an hour-long piece that we had commissioned from Richard Knight, then the Director of Music at Dean Close School, Cheltenham. Richard himself conducted the première of this colourful and eloquent piece.
Our travels continued in spring 2006 when the Choir visited Belgium and gave highly successful concerts of English music in Bruges and Aalst. Our varied selection of English music went down extremely well with the Belgian audiences, who gave us standing ovations at the end of each concert. We had a similarly enthusiastic response when we gave concerts in Normandy at Easter 2009. We’re looking forward to our next overseas venture: a concert tour of Belgium and Holland in May 2013.
In the immediate aftermath of Jim Cowley’s death the committee took a deliberate decision to take time before considering the appointment of another principal conductor. However, a key decision was taken at the end of 2001 when Linda Parsons, who had conducted several concerts since Jim’s death, was appointed as Philomusica’s Conductor following a triumphant performance of Elgar’s The Kingdom in Tewkesbury Abbey. Under her leadership the choir has since gone from strength to strength.
In season 2006/7 Philomusica celebrated its fortieth anniversary. To open the season we gave a gala performance of Elgar’s Dream of Gerontius to a packed and very appreciative audience in Tewkesbury Abbey in November 2006. The concert was our tribute to our President, the distinguished tenor, John Mitchinson. He was our guest soloist, singing the title role, in which he has achieved worldwide acclaim during his long and distinguished career.
A very notable milestone happily coincided with our fortieth year. On April 28th 2007 Philomusica gave its 900th concert. This also took place in Tewkesbury Abbey with Linda Parsons again on the rostrum to conduct a programme of music by two great composers who were born in the area from which we draw our membership and where we give most of our concerts. Sir Edward Elgar, born in Worcestershire, was represented by his ‘Enigma’ Variations and we also performed the mighty Sea Symphony by Ralph Vaughan Williams, born in Gloucestershire. Their music has featured strongly in our programmes over the years so it was fitting that we included important and much-loved works by both of them on this significant occasion in our history.
Since then the choir has continued to flourish and to attract new members. Highlights have included an acclaimed performance of Handel’s Messiah (2008), Orff’s Carmina Burana (2009) and Elgar’s The Kingdom (2011). Linda has also made a point of championing music by modern English composers and our programmes have included Andrew Carter’s Laudate Dominum, Karl Jenkins’ The Armed Man, John Rutter’s Requiem and Feel the Spirit, John Sanders’ Te Deum (2010) and Jonathan Willcocks’ Lux Perpetua. All of these works proved extremely popular both with the choir and with our audiences, as did Howard Goodall’s Eternal Light. A Requiem, of which we gave the Three Counties première in 2009. We also enjoy letting down our (musical) hair and, amongst our lighter programmes, we had particular fun performing Joseph and his Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat in 2011.
2016 will be an especially exciting year for us. We shall give our 1000th concert in the spring and then, in the autumn, we’ll celebrate Philomusica’s 50th birthday. We’re already laying ambitious plans not only for the 2016 concerts but also for the concerts from 2013 onwards, which will build up to the double celebration in 2016.
Philomusica continues to flourish, with a singing membership of over 100. We also continue to maintain the vision of our founders. So we remain a choir that welcomes new members without auditions; except for the occasional distinguished guest all the soloists, even in the most demanding roles, are members of the choir just as has been the case since the start. We love to perform in the two prestigious churches that have become our ‘homes’ for major orchestral concerts, the wonderful abbey churches in Pershore and Tewkesbury but we still take great delight in giving most of our concerts in smaller churches where live concerts are more of a rarity. And we proudly maintain our tradition of raising money for charities, local and national, large and small, through our concerts and we continue to add to the tens of thousands of pounds we’ve helped to raise. Last, but by no means least – indeed, crucially - we continue to have great fun and to enjoy singing great music.
